I saw something today that was horrifying. Unsettling to the core. Gave me the willies. I'm serious about this. Well, I guess it's best just to blurt it out. So what happened was this...
I was on the bus today, and saw a head trauma victim. I'm standing on a half full bus, the 38 Geary, and suddenly this fellow boards the bus. He's dressed nicely, he's got earphones in, listening to an iPod or something. Only problem is... half his head is missing. From the back, he looks normal. From the front, you can tell something is wrong, like he's the victim of a third degree burns to his forehead or something. But when he turns sideways, you see it and you can feel this terror in your gut... omigod, the front 25% of his head is missing. And the wound is flat, like someone took a section out of his brain.
After seeing something so shocking, you immediately think... Why is this man not in a hospital? How can he function without his frontal lobes? Why didn't the hospital put a prosthesis over that wound? All I can feel is this deep sorrow and compassion, wondering if he even realizes that he is so gravely wounded? Instead, he's seems functional and with his headphones, he adds surrealism to the air. Suddenly, you feel like he's some kind of character in some TV show about vampires, demons and zombies. Suddenly, I'm in a surrealistic movie.
I can think of three truly odd things I've seen. This man with only half a brain. An elephant man, horribly disfigured, in Lisbon. And finally, a young boy whose face is completely covered with hair, and looks like a little wolfboy. All of these sights were profoundly disturbing, but at the same time, brings me back. deeper than ever, to my humanity.
Strangely, the wolfboy... was also spotted while riding the 38 Geary. Apparently, the buses of San Francisco attact the macabre. Man, what a trip!
