I'm enjoying a quiet day today. No meetings, no deadlines. And it's too cold to go mountain biking. I did the Mt Tam thing a couple of weeks ago, when it was deceptively sunny, and I froze my ass off!
So I slept in this morning, and avoided reading email as long as possible. I made a simple continental breakfast of toast, a 2 minute soft boiled egg, and a little yogurt. I was in sheer bliss. It's the simple things in life that really matter and have the most impact on the quality of our lives. Now, instead of rushing headlong into work, I'm taking a minute to jot this down first, to remind myself later to take more time. There's a between Taoist poem that my father translated for once, when I was young. I can barely remember it now, but it went something like this:
I blinked a few times
and suddenly thirty years have passed
and my hair has turned to snow
That's exactly what this rat race of life is like. We get sucked into our dreams of conquest and riches. Even though this "pursuit of happiness" is enormously enjoyable, we lose track of time, we lose our way, we bend our principles. Next thing you know, you're an asshole. Suddenly, you're saying to yourself, "Man, what happened? I'm supposed to be young!"

I was in a shop yesterday, called Lululemon which makes overpriced athletic wear, and I saw a really cute tagline for their corporate philosophy: "Dance, Sing, Floss and Travel." Yep, they got it right.
