I was thinking about going to Sundance for the first time, and I asked my pal
Carl Bressler (formerly of Montana Artists and exec producer of Smoke Signals)
how to approach Sundance. Here was his advice --
To insure fun:
Preprint your business cards with your cell # and, if possible your local hotel
or condo number and dates that you will be there.
1) Drink more water than you thought possible. If you do not, altitude sickness
will be your only Sundance Experience, I guarantee it.
2) Do not go into parties and linger with any one group of people except very
early on at first to scan all areas. Stand in doorways to parties (even if
wearing multiple layers and standing outside) and greet everyone on their
way in and way out (and ask them where they are going on their way out).
You will meet way more people that way and possibly find out about other
fun, too.
3) Make advance dinner reservations now if you want to sit and eat good
dinners. At breakfast meet everyone at every table around you (never sit
in a corner-you are not famous and avoiding people.....yet) and ask them
what have they seen, what have they heard is good and what are the best
ski/board runs?
4) Ask everyone you speak to who is over thirty and looks important
(preferably between sixty and one hundred times a day) these questions:
"Do you know Carl Bressler? Have you seen him here? I heard he was coming?"
This will never get you punched but may start some interesting conversations.
Which may lead to you getting punched.....
5) Tell every woman you meet that you heard about and are looking for the
naked outdoor hot tub party. Especially if you have a hot tub.
6) Tell every filmmaker that has a film there you are a digital mobile
wireless guru and if they want to control their creative visions in the
future and have a gross participation in earnings from their creations
that they should call you and take you to dinner and you can discuss
consulting them on how to do it.
Anyway, I thought these suggestions were cute...
